Hey there butterfly, are you ready to fly?

Today, I really want to talk to you about TRANSFORMATION!

We all go through periods of change, of upheaval, of shedding old skin.  We all experience transition.

As Georg Lichtenberg said “Just as we outgrow a pair of trousers, we outgrow acquaintances, libraries, principles, etc., at times before they’re worn out and times – and this is the worst of all – before we have new ones.”

Ahhhh!!  One of the most frightening and equally liberating experiences in life is the burning of old patterns, old stories, old versions of ourselves in order to step into what is next.  The molting process isn’t an easy or a painless one.

Becoming the new you isn’t for the faint of heart.  If the task were easy, everyone would be doing it all the time.

It’s often easier and a hellova lot less painful to stay where you are instead of shedding skin.  Believe me…I intimately know this.

There are a few reasons I’m writing this to you today:  First, I have been feeling the itch for my own change lately so I’m experiencing a lot of this “in between” stuff.  Second, so many of my awesome private clients are experiencing transitions right now in their own lives and business.  They are being called to shed their old skin and step into living differently.  And lastly, it’s BUTTERFLY season!  No joke, there are butterflies all over the West Coast right now and I’ve been thinking a lot about the meaning of these beauties.

There is a reason the butterfly is such a beautiful creature.  She exists to remind us that change can be painful but the end result is totally extraordinary.

When a caterpillar begins the process of becoming a butterfly, she shuts herself off from the world.  She goes totally within, into the darkness, into the cocoon.

Once in the cocoon, when the time is right, the caterpillar releases an enzyme that turns her entire, little caterpillar body into a messy, icky soup.  She literally transforms into a goop, totally burning up her old self.  She self-destructs in order to begin the process of becoming a butterfly.

When she is ready to come out of the cocoon, the process of entering the world as a butterfly is a very tender one.  It’s not easy or simple for this new creature. She must be slow and methodical.

Carefully and intentionally, the butterfly emerges.

You might be wondering where I’m going with this metaphor…or maybe you already know.

Many of us know it’s time to change, to let go, to step forward, to course-correct.  But many of us choose not to listen to that call.  Many decide to stay in our old ways even when we know they don’t serve us anymore, even when we know we’ve outgrown those trousers.

What are you holding on to?

Maybe it’s a dysfunctional relationship, a soul-sucking job, or an old belief about who you are.  Maybe you’ve been keeping the lid on yourself because your power scares you or you’re afraid you’ll outshine someone else.  Maybe you’re afraid you’ll fail or you won’t be good enough or be judged.

So, tell me…..What is your old story?  Are you ready to let it go?

There’s a butterfly in you, waiting to emerge…

With endless love,

  1. I watched a butterfly fly across my window today…. And have been rewriting stories in my life. It’s so painful and there is soooooooooooo much change going on right now.

I came home from San Antonio and started to totally redo my whole apt in honor of my granddad who took care of everything he owned extremely well so I am getting rid of excess.

The story I need to let go of is my belief I have a dysfunctional relationship right now… And let go of the story that I’m too emotionally distraught to work.

    Thank you Julie <3

    • It sounds like honoring your grandfather in this way is a vital healing process for you. Allow your relationship with yourself and the memory of him to be your focus right now. Let all the other stories fall away. The pain can be strong but it won’t envelope you…feel it and dance with it. Ultimately you will emerge stronger and more alive than ever.

  2. Hi Julie,
As I read your blog and really felt the pain of the transition of the butterfly, I reflected on my life the last 2 years. After major emotional transformation, I still know there is more for me in the business world as my business has been melted slowly the last 4 to 5 years.
After self publishing my children’s book and ready to have my Novel edited (but needing to raise the money for the edit) I know that the hardest thing for me right now is marketing. I have an amazingly positive children’s book that has been touching not just the hearts of children but adults as well. I will have 2 more in the series and for sure a novel maybe 2. But my pain is knowing that to just start being an author in the climate of the world without marketing skills is a gigantic leap.
So I stay and still put focus on my current business, but it’s bring very little joy or money.
    All my love to you,

    • Dearest Lori…birthing a book is a huge process and, like any birth, can be quite painful. Trust that you will always be guided and protected when you follow your path. Sending you love.

The $54 million dollar question

The other day I read a story about a man who created an app and sold it for $54,000,000. He quit “real life” and decided to travel around the world with his family. For the rest of his life, that’s his plan. I started wondering what I would do if I had $54,000,000. Would I leave my apartment in San Francisco? Would I buy a big house on the beach?read more
